# Say What? Deciphering Graphic Design Acronyms

Confused by all of those crazy acronyms your graphic designer uses? We’re here to translate so you can communicate with confidence the next time he/she tells you “the JPG is CMYK, but it’s still FPO because the DPI isn’t high enough for print.”

- **CMYK = cyan, magenta, yellow, black**  
  *The four standard ink colors printers mix to create more complex colors*
- **DPI = dots per inch**  
  *The number of individual ink dots that are printed per inch of paper; the higher the number, the crisper the print*
- **EPS = encapsulated PostScript**  
  *A scalable art file often used for logo design*
- **FPO = for placement only**  
  *Using dummy text or watermarked images in a rough draft that will need to be replaced in the final version*
- **GIF = graphic interchange format**  
  *Static or animated image format*
- **JPG/JPEG = joint photographic experts group**  
  *The most common file format for digital photos*
- **PDF = portable document file**  
  *A file format that lets you view a document without the software in which it was originally created*
- **PMS = Pantone Matching System**  
  *A standardized color reproduction system*
- **PNG = portable network graphics**  
  *An image format that can have a transparent background*
